The island of Sumba in Indonesia boasts some of the best beaches. The island is populated by a group of people with vibrant culture, and they love to show their hospitality to foreigners. Nihiwatu, a luxury resort built in the remote island of Sumba, is a testament of the local’s hospitality. It is named as the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure back in 2016, and the owner, Chris Burch, is grateful for the recognition that his hotel received. In 2012, Chris Burch and James McBride traveled to Indonesia to scout for a good place to develop. They found the present day located of Nihiwatu, and fell in love with the place, which is very remote. This location is several hours away from Sumba’s main city, but Chris Burch thought that developing the area will draw in international tourists because of the beauty of the place. He spent more than $30 million to develop and renovate the area, and after three years, Nihiwatu opened to the public as a five star luxury hotel and resort. People who have visited Nihiwatu shared the unique hospitality and warmth that the Indonesian staff of the hotel is providing. The development of Nihiwatu brought employment to the local population. Today, Nihiwatu is considered as the largest private employer in the island of Sumba, and a share of the resort’s revenue goes to NGOs who are helping the local population of Sumba. Chris Burch shared that his intent to develop the location of present day Nihiwatu stemmed from his desire of creating an eco-friendly tourist spot in a remote location that will attract visitors to help the local economy.
